Fun for free: Brisbane Powerhouse

The Brisbane Powerhouse presents a diverse and much loved free program of events and exhibitions to compliment it's packed paid program and dining options. Here's a few free activities for you to enjoy:

  • Taking the mic at each week are the famous or soon-to-be famous comedians and musicians entertaining the crowd thanks to free programs like Livewired, Saturday Sessions and Live Spark.
  • The walls at the Brisbane Powerhouse are home to a number of free visual arts exhibitions throughout the year from Australian and international artists.
  • Every second and fourth Saturday of the month, the venue plays host to the Jan Powers Farmers Markets.

Only three CityCat stops from the CBD, the inner-northern village of New Farm has long been a place to connect with others. Relax in the beautifully shaded surrounds of New Farm Park, where picnickers seem almost permanently perched on deck chairs and checked rugs. The historic Brisbane Powerhouse, situated right next to New Farm Park, is also a must-see, playing host to live arts, weekend farmers markets and moonlight cinema (seasonal).

Stylish Brisbane Dynamic, positive, forward thinking, innovative and creative sums up Brisbane’s impressive fashion scene. The Queen Street Mall offers around 700 specialty stores and just nearby in Elizabeth Street is a place where you can discover Brisbane’s up-and-coming fashion designers at the Elizabeth Arcade. Celebrate New Year’s Eve in style this year at South Bank!

Fireworks are on at 8:30pm and midnight, and there will be live music performances at Riverside Green and the Cultural Forecourt from 2:00pm until 7:00pm.

Please note that this is a dry event- no alcohol is allowed to be brought into the precinct.

To ensure a safe and secure event, all patrons may be required to have their bags checked prior to entering the Parklands.

Brisbane's Christmas calendar kicks off with the Lighting of the Christmas Tree on 30 November and continues right through until Christmas Eve. Bursting with seasonal cheer, The City welcomes back their Christmas Music Showcase and Street Corner Carollers, hugely popular all singing, all dancing Myer Christmas Parade & Pantomime from 14 December. South Bank is going festive with its enchanted Sugarplums and Possum Chums programme and no Christmas is complete without going on the 4KQ Christmas Lights Tour and attending your local Christmas Carols.
For all your last minute Christmas shopping, there are a host of Christmas Twilight markets showcasing vintage items, fashion and bric a brac. You’ll be sure to pick up a gift or two from Christmas at Moggill, Valley Twilight Markets and BrisStyle Indie Twilight Markets,

Bring the family into The City to marvel at the magical Myer Brisbane City Christmas Windows, Myer’s gift to The City every year and in 2012 celebrating its 57th year.

On display right through until 6 January, the theme of the windows each year is a tightly guarded secret, making it even more exciting! And for the first time this year, a QR code will feature on the Christmas windows so you can access behind the scenes video footage of the windows. Simply hold any smartphone up to the QR code, and you will be able to access exclusive footage showing how the windows come to life, from the inspiration right through to the final creation.

Once you've checked out the windows, head upstairs and experience Santaland – a fun interactive playground where kids can ride a locomotive train, visit Santa, have their photo taken and send a letter to the North Pole.
